My maker’s process
Leaning into the Big Story of God, the “Great Potter,” interacting with people, his precious “clay” delights me every step of the way! This is how I make, and how I think about the spiritual implications when I do.
Wedge
First, I compress air bubbles out of the clay, like how the Great Potter must work the pride out of us before we can become anything else!
Center
Next, I align the clay to the center of the wheel by coning it up and pressing it down, the way the Potter must train us to center on His truth, so we aren’t thrown topsy-turvy along the way!
Pull
Then, I raise the clay to the right height and shape, like how our Potter lends his own strength so we can stand as designed.
Rest
Then, I let the wet vessels rest and dry peacefully, the way the Great Potter delights to give us rest from his own supply.
Fire
After that, I subject the pots to extreme heat in my kiln, like how the Potter lets us undergo trials to strengthen us for the best use.
Adorn
Finally I add glazes (and fire again) for visual beauty— simply for the joy of it! Like how the Great Potter cultivates uniqueness in everyone for our good and his artistic renown.
